"Sweetness has proved to be a force in evolution. By encasing their seeds in sugary and nutritious flesh, fruiting plants such as the apple hit on an ingenious way of exploiting the mammalian sweet tooth: in exchange for fructose, the animals provide the seeds with transportation, allowing the plant to expand its range.
Desire, then, is built into the very nature and purpose of fruit, and so, quite often, is a kind of taboo. The vegetable kingdom's lack of glamour by comparison (whoever heard of a forbidden vegetable?) can be laid to the fact that a vegetable's reproductive strategy doesn't turn on turning animals on." - Michael Pollan, The Botany of Desire
Full Strawberry Moon occurs on June 28th at 12:53 am (EDT).
According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, this month's moon was named by the Algonquin tribes of North America, who knew this as the time to gather ripening strawberries.
Last week, I was standing in my office with a basket of strawberries from the Union Square Farmer's Market. Eating over the sink, oblivious to the time, I consumed the entire container. So sweet, and so good - it was pure hedonistic pleasure.
Have you had your moment of bliss this Summer?
Sometimes a ripe peach, bordering on too ripe. Sometimes a tomato, still warm from the sun. Ecstasy. Messy and completely in the moment.
What is it about fruit that is so good?
Fruit is the highest form of food - as it gives itself up willingly. Have you ever considered that fruit actually wants to be eaten? The mission of a strawberry is to entice, to be delicious and nourishing. Appreciate that, and you will be rewarded.
When we eat fruit we take in the energy of ease. Fruit can't be rushed, it ripens at the perfect moment and no sooner. We can capture these peak moments in photographs, memories, or jam jars. In life and on our plates, sweetness is precious because it is temporary.
Choose to create some memories worth preserving this month. Juicy, uninhibited memories. Indulge in pleasure. Volunteer to be consumed by life.
Hammock, beach, strawberry, peach, whatever your pleasure....
Please send me a postcard, carrier pigeon, or tag me on your IG post. Let's 'work' together to work less, consume only what is of the highest good, and focus on what is truly nourishing.
I'll be enjoying the strawberries while they last.
